Air Strike in Syria

Airstrikes against Syria

Trump has ordered to launch an air strike against Syrian regime’s chemical weapons facility as a response to Syria’s chemical weapon attack for which UK and France will be supporting the air strike.

Trump has said, “I ordered the United States armed forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of Syrian dictator of Bashar al-Assad” from White House Diplomatic Reception Room.

According to witnesses, they have heard the explosions in the city of Damascus while the Trump was addressing the strike. According to US Defence official, B-1 Bombers, Navy Ships were used in the attack.

US Defence Secretary James Mattis said, the US had targeted Syrian regime’s Chemical Weapons program and also said, “We also selected targets that would minimize the risks to innocent civilians.” He added that “Right now this is a one-time shot and I believe that it sent a very strong message to dissuade (Assad), to deter him from doing this again.”

Targets of this attack included research center located in greater Damascus area. According to Mattis, this research facility was for development, production, and testing of chemical and biological warfare technology. The second target was, a chemical weapons storage facility in the west of Homs and the third target was, a storage site and command post in a nearby location.

Sites of Air Strike

Trump added by saying that, “The combined American, British and French response to these atrocities will integrate all instruments of our national power: military, economic and diplomatic.”

Prime Minister of UK, Theresa May stated that she has “authorized British armed forces to conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian Regime’s chemical weapons capability and deter their use.”

UK Defense Ministry said, UK elements for this strike were four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s and have launched Storm Shadow missiles on the Military facility near the west of Homs.

Trump also said that response will be sustained until the use of chemical weapon is prohibited by the Syrian regime. Commenting on last Saturday’s chemical weapon attack by Syria which has 70 kills, Trump said, “These are not actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster instead.”

On this air strike Anatoly Antonov, the Russian Ambassador, issued a statement to Washington threatening “consequences”. He said, “Again, we are being threatened. We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences. All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London, and Paris.”

Message for Assad Regime

Mattis said, “Assad regime clearly did not get the message last year” in regards to April 2017 poison gas attack when the US launched a Tomahawk missile strike at a desert military base and we have fired 57 missiles. He added, “This time we and our allies have struck harder.” and “Together we have sent a clear message to Assad and his murderous lieutenants that they should not perpetrate another chemical weapons attack for which they will be held accountable.”.
