TX, UNITED STATES, July 16, 2026 – ANewswire – A young resident of Sunny Glen Children’s Home was recognized in Washington, D.C. this week after her personal essay on the impact of violence was chosen from among students across the country for the “Do the Write Thing” program. While there, she even got to meet U.S. Senator Ted Cruz at the Capitol.

Her journey to D.C. started closer to home, with an essay contest through Communities In Schools of Cameron County. She wrote candidly about doing the right thing and how violence has shaped her own life — and out of more than 1,715 entries, hers was chosen to represent her school. At the local award ceremony, she found the courage to read her essay out loud, sharing her story and showing just how far she’s come.

Once in Washington, she spent several days alongside other honorees, making new friends and taking part in experiences most kids never get the chance to have. On the last day, the group toured the U.S. Capitol, and she still found time to wander the city and pick up a few souvenirs to bring home.

The trip wrapped up with a Recognition Dinner Ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center Pavilion, celebrating everything the participants had accomplished.

“Do the Write Thing” gives young people a chance to speak up and be part of a bigger, national conversation about reducing youth violence in schools and communities.

Everyone at Sunny Glen Children’s Home couldn’t be prouder of her — not just for the recognition, but for the perspective she shared with the world. As an organization dedicated to caring for children who’ve faced abuse, neglect, and trauma, Sunny Glen deeply believes in this program’s mission of keeping kids safe from violence.
